Integrated Safety Support
Biography for Richard G Yates, FRAeS MILT
Executive Director
Following just over 20 years in the Royal Air Force as a Nimrod navigator and senior operations manager, Richard Yates held a number of executive management positions in civil aviation regulatory bodies in Europe and Australia. Amongst many other safety regulation responsibilities, the regulation of aircrew flight and duty time and rest requirements has been a constant feature in Richard’s civilian career.
Having extensive knowledge and experience of complex operational environments and regulatory regimes in many parts of the world, and possessing excellent communication and organisational skills, Richard began consulting in 2001 focussing on safety management, including human factors, in all modes of transport. Since 2003 the majority of Richard’s work has been concentrated on the management of fatigue-related risk.
Drawing upon his wealth of operational and regulatory experience, Richard’s main consulting activities involve the development and implementation of policy, procedures and processes designed for the effective management of fatigue-related risk for clients in 24/7 industries and the integration of such mechanisms into existing safety systems.
Past and current clients for whom Richard has provided specialist safety management and fatigue management-related consulting services include the Qantas Group (including Qantas Freight Enterprises), Airservices Australia, the National Transport Commission, rail regulatory bodies in New South Wales and the Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment (Land and Fire Management). Richard also served as a member of the Victorian Department of Infrastructure (now Transport) Audit Committee from 2005 to 2008.
