Work Hours, Rostering and FAID® Analysis
Integrated Safety Support can support your operations by providing analysis of risk associated with 24/7 operations and other forms of extended working hours. We have extensive experience in the audit and analysis of rostering systems in order to manage fatigue-related risk. A core element of this is the FAID® model.
What is FAID®?
FAID® is a model that can be used to estimate work-related fatigue based on hours of work.
What does this mean in an operational setting?
FAID® can be used to predict whether rest periods between shifts/duties provide adequate opportunities for sleep.
Put simply, the higher the FAID® score = less sleep opportunity = higher fatigue
How Does FAID® Work?
FAID® Calculates Fatigue scores based on the following factors:
- Length of each work or rest period
- Time of day at which the work or rest occurred
- Prior (seven-day) work history of the individual
- Biological limitations of sleep and recovery
FAID® Strengths
FAID® has several strengths/advantages over other fatigue models:
- Semi-objective measure
- Well validated
- At least as accurate as any other product
- Quick and easy to use
- Indicates areas in rosters where further investigation may be required
FAID® Limitations
There are limitations to the FAID® model. No model can account for factors such as:
- Individual variation in sleep and fatigue
- Excessive commute times (> 1h)
- Workload
- Use of break periods
- Effects of time on task and task rotation
- Workplace environment
- Assumption that Rest Opportunity is used for Recovery Sleep
